I had to look this up since “kitchen party” is not a common term here in the states. I think the closest I have in my collection is this fantastic Fleet Foxes albums. I can picture them all with acoustic instruments siting around a table belting out great harmonies.

The Avett Brothers hold a special place in my heart. A few years back my family and I for about 4 months traveled 4 hours to and from every weekend to visit an aunt diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was always a long somber drive filled with tears. Pondering existential questions, faith, hope and watching the physical body of a loved one deteriorate week after week, The Avett Brothers helped me cope with the pain and heartache of loosing the second mother I was blessed to have in my life.

With lyrics like

"And I was sick with heartache
And she was sick like Audrey Hepburn when I met her
But we would both surrender
True love is not the kind of thing you should turn down"

I knew they were talking about my aunt and uncle! I still cant listen to them without thinking about the joys and sadness with my aunt and what their music meant to me at that time.

It breaks my heart just thinking about it. Sharon Jones in the summer of 2015 stopped in Paso Robles just a couple hours away. I was going to get tickets but didn't due to circumstances at the time. She passed away the following year in November from pancreatic cancer. She left a legacy with so much more to offer. It is painful I wasnt able the see the "female James Brown" in action.

Release date - 1989

The one and only album this band could muster and it almost didnt happen. This gem was the second attempt at recording a studio album at Sound and Vision. It was the blueprint for every ska punk band to come out in the 90s. An extremely self aware social commentary starting with the song "Knowledge" with a chorus "all I know is that i dont know nothing. And that's fine." The chunky chuga chuga ska riffs that sound so dingy. The most surprising thing about this album to me is Freeman's bass playing. He hits the groove pocket so hard in songs like "Sound System" "Take Warning" and "Bad Town"

It's at least worth one good listen

Title: Gem Club - Breakers
Year: 2011
Pianist and singer Christopher Barnes and cellist Kristen Drymala are a perfect match
for this calming 2011 release. These songs, to me, invoke a feeling of great loss but
with a comforting factor that puts you at ease... Like a parent saying "everything will
be ok". I return to this album often and enjoy its minimalistic approach of rewarding
you for attentive listening. My only gripe with the album is that its just under a 40
minute runtime and I am left wanting more.

The Decemberists’ frontman Colin Meloy doesn’t

The Decemberists’ frontman Colin Meloy doesn’t put much emphasis on the inherent moral of the Japanese folk tale which the album The Crane Wife is based on, but the allegorical fourth album from the band spins a story from feathers across three songs (two of which come as conjoined twins separated only by a tonal shift) parceled out along the album’s tracklist. The tale of a man who fell prey to the most basic human greed at the cost of his beloved’s health and, eventually, her presence entirely, The Crane Wife doesn’t require Aesop’s hand to draw out the moral lessons which seem inherent in the tale: being happy with what you have, accepting the limitations of those we love, even perhaps something as simple as respecting another’s privacy.
It’s not simply lip service from Meloy however, this ambivalence towards drawing a lesson from the lyrics. The male lead of The Crane Wife story is not painted as an evil caricature meant to embody specific sins and deliver a heavy-handed lecture, but as a man operating without complete information, who takes the time to help a wounded bird from the goodness of his heart, and who truly loved his wife and laments his mistakes and the choices that bring him to the tale’s end in the repeated refrain “I will hang my head, hang my head low.” The rest of the album is filled with songs which spin out like stories of their own, about the Skankhill Butchers who will come for children who don’t go to bed when they’re told, and a civil-war soldier killed in the war crooning a dirge duet with his lover. Still it is the triad title tracks, the lovingly crafted cautionary-tale-that-wasn’t and the talented musicality behind it which make this album and its story one that lingers long after the needle hits the label.

Music is a personal journey. It begins within someone who we will probably never meet. It could be someone with a natural talent at putting sounds together, someone with an incredible sound in their throat that they want to share, whether it’s for the attention or the fame or the money or because an office job sounds too boring. It could be someone who found that method of bringing out their thoughts and hopes and desires and dreams from their innermost self to manifest them in a way that we identify with, sometimes through abstraction and sometimes through brutal, realistic honesty.

And we find the sounds and the talents and the words and the wails that speak to us as individuals and we accept them as an idle part of our lives that fills in backgrounds and crevices between the things that matter more to us. Or we devote ourselves to them in commiseration, in awe, in a search for understanding. Or we challenge them and let them challenge us in return. We complete the hemisphere, from the peak of inception to the valley of incorporation, and at both ends of the curve the individual does with it what they may, and decides how much of themselves they will pour in to this journey, and this stranger, and in tracing the arc from one end to the other.

I finished putting together a means for this today. An investment in the future; in the journey. There are dreams for tomorrow in this table, and hopes for what things may come and who may end up gathering around it with me and where that will be. Midnight carpet slow-dances and isolated introspection. Filling in the backgrounds and crevices and providing a channel for commiseration and challenge.

Here’s to the collaboration, from point to point.

I was 15 years old and a friend of mine gave me a mix tape explaining to me that there was more to music than just Skinny Puppy and Ministry, which I doubted at the time. He gave me a history lesson on electronic, experimental and industrial music, and it was much appreciated. One of those tracks was “Gripped by Fear” and I knew I wanted to consume more of Front 242’s library. It was dark and melodic and just struck a chord with me. To this day it’s still my favorite Front 242 song and it has opened a door to many many bands in my library. I am grateful for all my music loving friends for all the recommendations, good and bad, to help me discover old/new music.

I fell in love with the Cocteau Twins the first time I heard them as a young teen. From Elizabeth’s distant reverb smeared vocals, the abrasive, at times, guitar work of Robin and the driving bass lines from Simon. The tightly formed package was exactly what I needed at the time and I always held their albums in high regards. For me, The Pink Opaque is special since the song “Pearly-dewdrops' Drops” was played at my wedding and was adored by my wife and I. It instantly throws me back to simpler times in my life and a new found relationship with my wife. There are many songs that can take me back to a place/time and this is one of my favorites.

Going in to 2001 my relationship with The Cure was one of rote acquaintance, a superficial sort of familiarity with the poppy Friday I’m in Love and well-crafted but ultimately not-unique pinings like Lovesong and Pictures of You. That’s more my own fault of course, there was plenty to distinguish them by that time and I just hadn’t invested; that all changed when I heard Wish – their ninth album - for the first time. Tracks like Cut and Apart lacked the 80’s bubblegum sheen I had come to associate with the group and instead caterwauled and plead with a heady angst and hard driving guitars on the former and more stripped down and patient vocals over a fresh shade of their familiar bubbly reverb in the latter which spoke intimately to someone who was – at that time - a lonesome young man looking for kinship and guidance in a turbulent world. Among those and plenty more stand-out tracks however, it was A Letter to Elise that would seal the album as a lifelong companion. It’s a poetic and honest examination of the ways we eventually grow up, confront, and ultimately accept that there is a reason that perfect endings are reserved for storybooks and fairy tales. Despite the inherent lesson of the track, things were relatively easy for a long time, and my fascination with this song was purely appreciative and academic for almost two decades.

And then one day after years of peppering it in to mix CDs and iPod playlists, it became so very real, and the foretold story of that track, and this album, and the fixations of love and loss and the desire for things to work out and the way reality denies us this simple request have shone a new light on Wish. So. For those who love, and those who have lost, and those somewhere past the first of those and not yet at the second: may you never reach it.
But if you do, you won’t have to be alone.

Turns out there’s even a soundtrack for it.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Hard Promises

Released: (a day late post) May 5th 1981

If you push me into a corner, I'll pick Hard Promises over Damned the Torpedoes. Recorded at Sound City co produced by Jimmy Iovine, it piggies off its predecessor with "more of the same" however just slightly more mature. That glorious 12-string of Mike Campbell in the beginning track The Waiting makes it feel just a little bigger than the Damned beginning with Refugee. Jimmy Iovine said, "I thought ‘The Waiting’ was bigger than ‘Refugee.’ So when it wasn’t a hit, a real hit, it killed me. It was devastating. I felt it was as good as anything I’d ever been near. That song, I thought that was big." No. 19 ain't bad though. Before its release there was a dispute on "superstar pricing" pricing the album at 9.98 instead of the usual price of 8.98. Petty had said, "A lot of fans have been with us for a long time and I think they trust us... MCA has done a great job selling our records, but they couldn't see the reality of what it's like on the street — they couldn't see that raising the album's price wouldn't be fair." Petty and company threatend to withhold release or name the album Eight Ninety-Eight. This is an early US pressing with "WE LOVE YOU J.L." etched in the runout in tribute to John Lennon who was shot the December before this release.

Fun Fact: Donald Duck Dunn famed Booker T. and the M.G.'s and session bassist for Stax Records plays bass on A Woman in Love.

This is the first vinyl I owned; it was given to me by a friend. Cesar (aka Mars Nebula, aka Juice L’Orange) and I would spin his records at house parties in the early 2000s and this was a staple any time I got my hands on the mixer. He gave it to me one day, unprompted by anything else, and while I had no way to play it I’ve always made sure to know where it was and have it within arm’s reach. It’s a funky disco-house track with an earbug bassline and earnest, plaintive female vocals that stands just fine on its own or in a set.

Released: 1972

One of the greatest moments in music history was when Al Green and Willie Mitchell met in Midland Texas in 1966. Though their musical relationship wasn't codified till Al Green's sophomore album Green Is Blues in 1969, Let's Stay Together solidified that warm Memphis soul sound. While Stax records down the street were producing more earthly soul sounds, Mitchell at Royal Studios was creating that tight warm smooth tone that is all over this album.
Al Green and Willie Mitchell are my absolute hands down favorite artist and producer duo of all time. Willie brought out the best in Green's talent and Green gave Willie plenty of talent to work his magic. As the story goes... After Willie and drummer Al Jackson gave Green a rough mix, Green wrote the lyrics to Let's Stay Together in 15 minutes! It almost wasn't released because Al Green hated the "thin" sound of his falsetto. Willie Mitchell has said, "The only fight I ever had with him was about 'Let's Stay Together,' because he thought 'Let's Stay Together' was not a hit." Fun Facts: 1) Willie Mitchell thought Green needed an audience so he brought in a group of "winos" hanging around outside in the studio for Green to sing to. If you listen closely, you can hear some of their ruckus on some of the tracks. 2) There is an RCA DX-77 ribbon mic "mic number 9" in studio that nobody but Al Green can use.
